Modular

PSU.

Our team developed the X-Program PSU (Passenger Service Unit) demonstrator for our client to advance cabin connectivity across the entire fleet. This project focused on creating a modular PSU design that meets the evolving needs of passengers and airlines, supporting our client’s vision of a harmonized Airspace cabin.

We engineered two configurations: a standard PSU with traditional signage and an advanced version featuring a larger, dynamic display. The digital interface supports new use cases, such as real-time flight information and safety demonstrations, using advanced LCD and eInk technology.

The design emphasized modularity, sustainability, and ease of maintenance, featuring a plug-and-play architecture with interchangeable components. This approach simplifies installation, repair, and customization, ensuring the PSU remains adaptable to future needs.

Developing a versatile, sustainable Passenger Service Unit (PSU) with integrated projection and illumination to enhance a connected cabin strategy.

UI.

The UI of the PSU (Passenger Service Unit) demonstrator is designed to offer passengers a seamless and intuitive interaction experience. Crafted with precision, the interface features touch-sensitive controls for lighting, air vents, and call buttons, all arranged to maximize ease of use.

To ensure the UI seamlessly integrates into the cabin environment, a custom chair demonstrator was built, allowing us to refine the design for optimal user interaction. Given the highly regulated nature of UI design in aviation, we adhered to stringent standards while still striving to create an interface that feels appealing, clean, fresh, and intuitive. The result is a UI that not only meets industry requirements but also enhances passenger comfort and usability.

Making Of.

Our ongoing work on the X-Program PSU represents a dynamic collaboration, blending interdisciplinary expertise to ensure customer needs are met. This project was developed through a series of iterative workshops conducted at the facilities of nFrontier, where our design team worked closely with the client.

To bring this concept to life, we've adopted a hands-on approach, building a small-scale chair demonstrator that allows us to design while experiencing prototypes in real-time. This process enables us to seamlessly iterate between physical experience and digital design, continuously refining the PSU's functionality and user interface. By integrating the insights of various experts—from engineers to UX designers—we're crafting a solution that is both innovative and precisely tailored to the demands of future cabin environments.
